Esteemed photographer Josef Koudelka was born in Moravia, Czechoslovakia in 1938. His photographic accomplishments include the Robert Capa Gold Medal in 1969 for his work chronicling the tumultuous period of the Warsaw Pact armies' intervention in Prague. Choosing to leave his native Czechoslovakia in 1970, Koudelka moved to England where he soon joined the Magnum Photos agency. He has since been awarded two grants from the Arts Council of Great Britain, the first in 1973 and the second in 1976. Koudelka, who became a naturalized citizen of France in 1987, has also received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1980 and the Grand Prix National in France in 1987. His numerous monographs include Exiles (Aperture, 1988); The Black Triangle (Magnum, 1994); Chaos (Phaidon, 1999); and Limestone (Magnum, 2001). His photographs have been collected and exhibited by major museums throughout the world.
