Born in Prague in 1935, Jan Saudek studied at the School of Industrial Photography and worked as a reproduction photographer for various firms until 1980. In 'Theatre of Life', as he refers to his body of work, he focuses on the basic relationships of love, liberty and emotional reassurance. His hand-colored portraits and figure studies have won him international renown for their strikingly emotive, and occasionally irreverent, allegorical imagery. His work has been published in numerous monographs, and is included in major public collections in Europe and America.
