For over a decade Larry Schwarm has photographed the prairie fires of his native Kansas, setting out to capture every essence of the burning landscape. Some of Schwarm's images are calm and otherworldly, others are raging and almost apocalyptic, yet all reveal a startling beauty born from devastation.
His photographs have been included in various publications and are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art and others. Schwarm is Professor of Art at Emporia State University in Kansas, where he teaches photography. His monograph, On Fire, published in 2003, was chosen from over 500 submissions to be the inaugural winner of the Center for Documentary Studies/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography.
