On Fire: Larry Schwarm In a prairie ecosystem fire is an essential element of life and Larry Schwarm has documented the controlled burnings of tallgrass prairies in his native-Kansas for over a decade. The resulting images are a revelation of the beauty that can spring from destruction, while also engaging the numerous symbolic and emotional associations conjured by fire. Sensual and dynamic, at times abstract, and attentive to the different personalities of each blaze, Schwarm's photographs affirm that fire can be as easily redemptive and compelling as it can be tragic and devastating. Schwarm was selected from over 500 submissions to be the inaugural winner of the Center for Documentary Studies/ Honickman First Book Prize in Photography. Hardcover |
