Mike Smith moved to Eastern Tennessee in 1981 and has since devoted himself to photographing life in the hills of Southern Appalachia. His photographs depict the seemingly ordinary people and places of a forgotten region of America, yet there is a maturity and openness to Smith's images that leave behind the stereotypes of Southern life and reveal a more complex reality. Initially an outsider, Smith has gained the trust of the area's residents, and his body of work stands as a unique visual study, reflecting an understanding of a private world not often seen.
